Description
An enzyme that catalyzes biochemical reactions of transfer of glutamate residues between peptides in the outer and mitochondrial membranes of cells of the bile ducts, kidneys, and pancreas. It is a marker of cholestasis - bile stasis in the bile ducts; its activity in bile is several tens of times higher than in blood. The activity of the enzyme in the blood increases in various diseases of the liver and bile ducts, such as infectious hepatitis, fatty liver hepatosis, toxic (including alcoholic) hepatitis, cirrhosis, and neoplasms of the liver and bile ducts. The significance of GGTP in the diagnosis of diseases of the hepatobiliary tract is determined by its high sensitivity (several times greater than ALT and AST) to pathological processes causing the slightest violations of bile passage through the bile ducts.
