Description
A protein synthesized by the liver, whose main function is binding free hemoglobin formed in the blood during the destruction of erythrocytes and preventing iron loss by the body. By binding to free hemoglobin, haptoglobin prevents kidney damage caused by the latter. The haptoglobin-hemoglobin compound is rapidly captured by the reticuloendothelial system and subjected to utilization. Haptoglobin also participates in the inhibition of peroxides formed in inflammatory foci. The test is primarily used to assess the severity of intravascular hemolysis.
