Description
Gastrin is a specific hormone that regulates the production of hydrochloric acid and pepsin by the gastric mucosa. It is also involved in the regulation of gastric motility and stimulates the secretion of other biological regulators of digestion. Gastrin is secreted by G-cells located in the gastric mucosa and, in smaller amounts, by D-cells of the pancreas. Gastrin secretion is stimulated by protein breakdown products (oligopeptides and amino acids), as well as by chemical and mechanical stimulation of the antral part of the stomach. Determination of gastrin concentration is used to assess the condition of the gastric mucosa, and for monitoring and diagnosis of peptic ulcer disease and specific gastrin-producing tumors — gastrinomas.
