Description
Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) is one of the main enzymes involved in the metabolic degradation of catecholamines, such as dopamine and noradrenaline, or catecholestrogen in the prefrontal cortex. The activity of this enzyme is determined by allelic gene polymorphism and can result in two states: normal (population) activity and impaired (reduced). Disruption of the catecholamine metabolic pathway is the neurobiochemical basis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and other psychiatric disorders, such as memory and attention deficits, increased anxiety, stress, etc.
