Description
Sex hormone-binding globulin is a serum glycoprotein that regulates the biological activity of male and female sex hormones by binding them in blood plasma. The globulin is synthesized in the liver, with estrogens stimulating and testosterone inhibiting its synthesis.
For diagnostic purposes, determination of blood SHBG levels is used for accurate interpretation of testosterone and estradiol concentration measurements. Normally, up to 2% of testosterone is in the free form, and about 60% is weakly bound to albumin. These fractions are considered the most biologically active.
