Description
The level of glucose in the cerebrospinal fluid is one of the important indicators of the function of the blood-brain barrier and is widely used for its assessment. Glucose is the main substrate for neurons. Although most neurons receive glucose from the bloodstream, trophic function may still be impaired in some neurons adjacent to the brain ventricles when the glucose concentration in the cerebrospinal fluid changes. The test is used in the diagnosis of the nervous system pathology, including inflammatory diseases of the brain and its membranes, and neoplastic processes (tumors).
