Description
Insulin is the principal hormone regulating carbohydrate metabolism in the body. It is secreted into the blood by the beta cells of the endocrine portion of the pancreas. The hormone level depends on the blood glucose level. Insulin enables the transport of glucose across the cell membrane and inhibits the formation of glucose from glycogen. Insulin participates in lipid metabolism by inhibiting the breakdown of fats and increasing the rate of fatty acid synthesis. It is broken down in the liver, with a half-life of 10–20 minutes; therefore, even a short-term insulin deficiency against the background of a high blood glucose level can lead to serious dysfunction of many organs and tissues. Measurement of the insulin concentration is used for the differential diagnosis of forms of diabetes mellitus and insulinoma.
