Description
Insulin-like growth factor-1 (somatomedin C) belongs to hormone-like substances of protein nature. Somatomedin C mediates most of the biological effects of pituitary somatotropic hormone, exhibits anabolic activity, stimulates linear bone growth, and increases the sensitivity of cells to insulin. The IGF level changes with age, increasing from birth to 20 years and then gradually declining throughout life. Testing of this parameter is used for the diagnosis and monitoring of diseases associated with impaired secretion of somatotropic hormone and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
