Description
The ITGA2 gene (integrin alpha-2, a subunit of the VLA-2 receptor) encodes a membrane glycoprotein known as GPIa and is expressed in megakaryocytes and platelets, in which the protein forms a complex with integrin beta-1 (ITGB1), ensuring cell adhesion to collagen. This property is especially important in tissue injury - a high degree of platelet adhesion contributes to the formation of a primary protective layer.
The 807C>T mutation (TT genotype) is associated with an abnormal increase in platelet adhesiveness to collagen and alteration in T-lymphocyte activation, which in turn can lead to thrombus formation. It is investigated to detect genetic predisposition to hereditary forms of thromboembolism, early myocardial infarction, and stroke. OMIM: +192974.
