Description
Interleukin-1 is one of the main regulatory cytokines of the immune process. It possesses a number of functions, the most important of which is the induction of fever. Interleukin-1 is able to directly affect the hypothalamus, causing an increase in body temperature. Even a slight increase in temperature leads to the activation of lymphocyte proliferation, which in turn leads to an acceleration of the development of the immune response to the pathogen. Also, this cytokine activates leukocyte adhesion to the vascular endothelium, T- and B-lymphocytes, and stimulates phagocytosis. Hyperproduction of IL-1 can lead to such undesirable effects as a sharp drop in blood pressure, anorexia (lack of appetite), and destruction of cartilage tissue. Determination of the interleukin-1 beta level allows drawing a conclusion about the synthesis activity of this cytokine by lymphocytes, as well as determining the role of IL-1 in the corresponding reactions of cellular immunity.
