Interleukin-8

Description

IL-8 belongs to the group of chemokines - substances whose main function is to induce migration of various cell types (leukocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, lymphocytes) into the zone of inflammation. Another important property of this glycoprotein is the ability to affect the vascular endothelium, increasing the adhesion ("sticking") of neutrophils to its surface. There is evidence that IL-8, together with other biologically active substances, mediates the development of brain edema. Examination of the amount of interleukin-8 in cell culture allows drawing a conclusion about the synthesis activity of this cytokine by lymphocytes, as well as determining the role of IL-8 in the corresponding reactions of the cellular link of immunity.
