Description
Proteins encoded by the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are part of the homologous DNA recombination system that repairs double-strand DNA breaks. Germline pathogenic variants in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes lead to a significantly increased risk of breast, ovarian, prostate, and pancreatic cancer. Penetrance (the probability of developing the disease during a lifetime) in carriers of pathogenic variants in these genes varies for different tumor types. In BRCA-associated tumor conditions, earlier disease manifestation with a more aggressive tumor phenotype is observed. The test is used for the diagnosis of BRCA1- and BRCA2-associated oncological conditions, as well as when prescribing targeted therapy with PARP-inhibitors.
