Description
Von Willebrand factor is a glycoprotein released from endothelial cells under the influence of various stimuli (mechanical trauma, thrombin, endotoxin, histamine, interleukin-1 (IL-1), interferon-gamma (IFN-y), complement membrane attack complex, oxidative stress, etc.). It is a complex protein necessary for the adhesion of platelets to each other and their attachment to the site of vessel injury. It also prevents premature inactivation of blood coagulation factor VIII, acting as its carrier. In von Willebrand disease, one of the stages of blood clot formation is disrupted. This is caused by a genetic defect resulting in a reduced amount of one of the blood coagulation factors – von Willebrand factor – in the blood (or its complete absence). Laboratory research methods play a key role in diagnosis and are necessary for detecting von Willebrand factor deficiency and assessing blood coagulation system indicators. This von Willebrand factor antigen test is used for its quantitative determination in the blood.
