Description
Joint examination of potassium, sodium, and chloride content in 24-hour urine allows for a detailed assessment of the functional state of kidneys and the severity of electrolyte balance disorders, while providing important diagnostic information in urolithiasis and endocrine pathology. These indicators, when determined together, provide detailed information about the function of the tubular apparatus of the nephron (the structural and functional unit of the kidney), since secretion and reabsorption of these ions occur there. The severity of the impairment of ion secretion in urine directly depends on the severity of the pathological process in the kidney. The study may be useful in inflammatory kidney diseases, water-electrolyte balance disorders, urolithiasis, endocrine diseases, and renal failure.
