Description
Potassium in 24-hour urine is an indicator that characterizes not only electrolyte metabolism in the body but is also a very important parameter of the secretory function of the kidneys, since 90% of potassium is excreted from the body by them. Potassium, as the main intracellular cation, participates in processes ensuring the conduction of nerve impulses, muscle contractions, regulation of heart rhythm, and corrects the acid-base balance of blood and tissue fluid. Potassium balance in the body depends on blood pH, aldosterone levels, and the functional capacity of the kidneys. Increased levels are observed in: hemolytic anemia, malignant neoplasms, acute and chronic renal failure, Addison's disease, diabetic ketoacidosis, bronchial asthma, strychnine intoxication, status epilepticus.
