Description
Potassium is the main intracellular cation; along with sodium and chlorine, it forms the membrane potential and participates in the formation of action potential on the membranes of neurons, which is the key mechanism for conducting nerve impulses. It also participates in processes ensuring muscle contractions, regulation of heart rhythm, and corrects the alkaline balance of blood and tissue fluid. Potassium balance in the body depends on blood pH, aldosterone level, and the functional capacity of the kidneys. Increased levels are observed in hemolytic anemia, malignant neoplasms, acute and chronic renal failure, Addison's disease, diabetic ketoacidosis, bronchial asthma, strychnine intoxication, and status epilepticus.
