Description
Calprotectin is the main fecal marker of inflammatory processes in the GI tract. It constitutes up to 60% of the total protein of the neutrophil cytoplasm, and its content in stool is proportional to the number of leukocytes that have entered the intestinal lumen. It is a small protein (approx. 40 kDa) that contains calcium and zinc in its composition, due to which the molecule persists for a long time in samples. It allows diagnosing inflammatory bowel diseases and can also be used for differential diagnosis of inflammatory and non-inflammatory processes in the GI tract. The test is often used in gastroenterology and pediatrics.
