Description
Calcium is one of the main intracellular cations. Its main amount is contained in bone tissue (about 99%). In the body, calcium is physiologically active only in the form of a cation (Ca++), which is present in large quantities in blood plasma. Calcium is excreted by the kidneys in an ionized form and in the form of compounds with other ions. Calcium performs a number of very important functions in the body: it is a structural element ensuring the structural integrity of bone tissue, serves as one of the factors influencing the conduction of nerve impulses, and ensures the function of many enzymes. The level of calcium in blood plasma is determined by the level of its metabolism in bones, intake with food, and excretion by the kidneys. Regulation of calcium metabolism is carried out mainly by parathyroid hormone.
