Description
Calcitonin is a protein hormone produced by the parafollicular epithelial cells (C-cells) of the thyroid gland. It is metabolized in the kidneys. The synthesis activity of this hormone depends on the concentration of calcium ions in the blood. Calcitonin has hypocalcemic and hypophosphatemic effects and stimulates the growth of bone tissue cells. Calcitonin measurement is used for the diagnosis and monitoring of medullary thyroid carcinoma.
