Description
Carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) is a stable complex of carbon monoxide formed in erythrocytes upon inhalation of carbon monoxide, as a result of methylene chloride metabolism in the liver, or as a byproduct of hemoglobin degradation. Methemoglobin (met-Hb) is a product of iron oxidation in the hemoglobin molecule. If heme iron does not revert to the ferrous form, met-Hb is formed, which in turn leads to impaired oxygen transport. At high met-Hb levels, both fully oxidized Hb molecules and partially oxidized molecules with altered functional parameters are present. They cause impaired oxygenation processes in organs and tissues with the development of hypoxia and cyanosis. The appearance of neurological symptoms is associated with impaired desaturation and elongation of fatty acids in neurons.
