Description
Carboxyhemoglobin (HbCO) is a stable complex of carbon monoxide formed in erythrocytes upon inhalation of carbon monoxide, as a result of methylene chloride metabolism in the liver, or as a byproduct during hemoglobin degradation. The main triggering mechanism for the development of hypoxia in carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is the formation of HbCO, which loses the ability to transport oxygen. It is formed by the action of carbon monoxide (CO) on the body, as well as in poisoning with metal carbonyls: nickel and iron. It is constantly present in the blood in small amounts, but its concentration may fluctuate depending on conditions and lifestyle.
