Description
The content of chloride in 24-hour urine allows assessing the level of its elimination (excretion) from the body by the kidneys. Chloride is one of the main components of extracellular fluid, playing a role in water-salt metabolism, contributing to water retention in the body. Chloride ions participate in maintaining osmotic balance in the body, along with sodium and potassium. They form the membrane potential of cells, activate a number of enzymes, and contribute to maintaining pH in the stomach.
Up to 95% of chloride is excreted from the body by the kidneys.
Increased excretion is observed in: urolithiasis, chronic nephritis, acute renal failure, hypofunction of the adrenal cortex.
A decrease is possible in: hyperfunction of the adrenal cortex, development of edema, depletion of sodium reserves due to alkalosis, head injuries, metabolic acidosis during prolonged diarrhea.
Indications for the analysis:
1. Diagnosis and monitoring of kidney diseases
2. Diagnosis of adrenal cortex dysfunction
