Description
Chlorine is one of the main components of extracellular fluid and plays a role in water-salt metabolism, contributing to water retention in the body. Chlorine ions participate in maintaining osmotic balance in the body, along with sodium and potassium. They form the membrane potential of cells, activate a number of enzymes, and contribute to maintaining pH in the stomach.
Increased levels are observed in: kidney diseases, diabetes insipidus, primary hyperparathyroidism (not always), respiratory alkalosis, insufficiency of the adrenal cortex.
Decrease is possible in: metabolic and respiratory acidosis, adrenal crisis, acute porphyria, head injuries, appearance of edema, diarrhea, vomiting.
Indications for ordering the test:
1. Diagnosis and monitoring of kidney diseases
2. Diagnosis of adrenal cortex dysfunction
3. Confirmation of certain endocrine diseases
