Description
An enzyme that breaks down various choline esters. It is represented by two varieties: acetylcholinesterase (or true cholinesterase), localized primarily in nervous tissue, and cholinesterase (pseudocholinesterase), which is synthesized in the liver. Cholinesterase activity is directly related to the protein-synthesizing function of the liver, which determines its diagnostic significance in hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, and oncological diseases of the hepatobiliary system.
