Food products are the main source of cobalt; it is especially abundant in milk, beets, green onions, cabbage, and parsley. Cobalt is a component of vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin), participates in enzymatic processes, iron metabolism, erythropoiesis, and is necessary for the synthesis of thyroid hormones. Inhalation poisoning with cobalt can be accompanied by pulmonary edema, the development of severe allergic reactions, and thrombosis. In chronic poisoning, chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, and cobalt cardiomyopathy develop. The study is used to diagnose cobalt deficiency in the body, as well as poisoning with this chemical element.
