Description
Protein C, protein S, and antithrombin III are natural anticoagulants that prevent excessive thrombus formation. Hereditary deficiency of these factors can lead to the development of thrombophilia (a predisposition to thrombus formation) and thrombosis. Congenital deficiency of protein C, protein S, or antithrombin III is detected in 15% of cases of unexplained spontaneous and recurrent deep vein thrombosis in young and middle-aged patients.
