Description
Human pancreatic elastase-1 is one of the pancreatic enzymes found in pancreatic and duodenal juice and belongs to the family of acidic elastases. The determination of fecal elastase is used to assess the exocrine function of the pancreas. A decrease in fecal elastase activity is found in patients with chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, type 1 diabetes mellitus, and in children with cystic fibrosis, reflecting exocrine pancreatic insufficiency in these patient groups.
Indications:
1. Diagnosis of chronic pancreatitis;
2. Diagnosis of pancreatic tumors (cancer);
3. Diagnosis of cystic fibrosis;
4. As part of a workup for the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes mellitus.
