Description
Coproporphyrin is the most frequently excreted porphyrin in secondary porphyrin disorders. In case of impaired heme synthesis, the concentration of porphyrins in urine increases. Porphyrins are orange-red fluorescent compounds consisting of 4 pyrrole rings, which are formed during the process of heme biosynthesis. They are found in all cells, participate in energy metabolism, and are excreted in urine in small amounts. Increased levels of porphyrins in urine indicate a disturbance in heme biosynthesis, which can be congenital, for example, in hereditary enzymopathies, or acquired, for example, in liver diseases and hemolytic anemia.
