Description
Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are monocarboxylic acids with a chain length of up to 6 carbon atoms. SCFAs are produced mainly by anaerobic bacteria, which dominate the composition of the intestinal microflora. The type of substrate fermented in the large intestine determines the spectrum and quantity of SCFAs. Each SCFA is formed during the fermentation of the substrate by bacteria of a certain species, which allows judging the functional activity of specific representatives of the intestinal microflora.
