Description
A hormone belonging to the corticosteroid group. The synthesis and release of cortisol into the blood depends on ACTH activity. The main functions of cortisol: accelerates glucose synthesis, increasing its blood level; stimulates the breakdown of fats; stabilizes mast cell membranes (antiallergic effect); has an anti-inflammatory effect. The hormone has a circadian secretion rhythm with maximum concentration in the morning (6-8 a.m.) and minimum levels in the evening (after 9 p.m.). In stressful situations, trauma, physical exertion, and pregnancy, the blood concentration rises. The test is used for the diagnosis of Itsenko-Cushing disease and syndrome.
* Test results depend on the time of blood sampling. Cortisol concentrations and reference values for sampling before and after 12:00 will differ.
The test is recommended to be taken in the morning hours. To obtain the most informative results, check with your attending physician for the most optimal time for sample collection.
