Description
An enzyme involved in energy metabolism processes, primarily in muscle and nervous tissue cells. It participates in the synthesis and breakdown of creatine phosphate, from which it gets its name. The diagnostic significance of determining serum creatine kinase levels lies in the increase of enzyme activity during muscle tissue damage. Since the enzyme is represented by several varieties specific to different tissues, the activity of a particular isoform will increase first depending on the localization of the pathological process. In heart and brain tissues, creatine kinase is represented by the MB variety of the enzyme. Creatine kinase is one of the early markers of myocardial infarction and is used in the diagnosis and monitoring of myopathies.
