Description
Laboratory examination aimed at identifying signs of cystitis, isolating the causative agent of the disease, and determining its sensitivity to antibacterial drugs. This examination is also applicable for the differential diagnosis of inflammatory diseases of the lower urinary tract.
Examination of urine in two portions (the first and middle portions of morning urine) is used for the topical diagnosis of the inflammatory process in the urinary tract. The first portion of urine serves to detect inflammatory changes in the lower and middle sections of the urethra. The second portion is indicative of the upper sections of the urethra and the bladder. Thus, by assessing the changes in each portion, it is possible to tentatively establish the predominant localization of the inflammatory process. Pathological changes detected only in the first portion of urine are characteristic of urethritis. If the characteristic picture of the inflammatory process is found in both the second and first portions, cystitis can be assumed. Changes in the second portion of urine are characteristic of inflammatory diseases of the prostate and seminal vesicles.
Isolation of the pathogen, if present, is performed by culture method followed by determination of sensitivity to antibiotics, which allows selecting the most effective antibacterial therapy.
