Description
Lactate is the final product of glucose breakdown under conditions of oxygen deficiency. It is one of the markers of acidosis – a shift in blood plasma pH to the acidic side as a result of pathological conditions leading to oxygen deficiency in tissues or intoxication. Determination of lactate level is used for the diagnosis of metabolic acidosis and assessment of tissue oxygenation levels.
