Latent Iron Binding Capacity (LIBC)

Description

It represents an indicator reflecting the potential ability of blood serum to bind an additional amount of iron. Normally, transferrin (an iron carrier protein) is only one-third saturated with iron; under various pathological conditions, the percentage of transferrin saturation with iron may change. The latent iron-binding capacity of serum indicates the potential capacity of transferrin for saturation (that is, how much more iron it can bind). LIBC = TIBC - ("minus") blood serum iron.
