Description
An enzyme secreted by the pancreas that is involved in the breakdown of lipids in the intestine. The primary localization of lipase in the body is the cells of the pancreas. Upon its damage as a result of disease, trauma, or surgical intervention, the enzyme enters the blood, where its activity can increase significantly compared to the background level. Lipase is the most specific marker of pancreatic damage.
