Lipoprotein (a)

Description

Lipoprotein (a) is a macromolecular complex of low-density lipoprotein and apolipoprotein (a) protein, which serves as a clinical laboratory indicator of a significantly increased risk of premature and widespread atherosclerosis and related diseases (ischemic heart disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular diseases). Lipoprotein (a) is a unique macromolecular complex consisting of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and a hydrophilic glycoprotein called apolipoprotein (a). Apo (a) is covalently linked to LDL via a disulfide bond. Lp (a) participates in the process of atherosclerotic plaque formation and growth. Lp (a) enhances monocyte chemotaxis, LDL oxidation, and the uptake of oxidized LDL by macrophages, stimulates the expression of intercellular adhesion molecules, and promotes the proliferation of smooth muscle cells. Therefore, patients with elevated Lp (a) concentrations are at risk for developing premature and widespread atherosclerosis and its clinical manifestations – ischemic heart disease (IHD) and cerebrovascular disease (CVD). This test is used for: • determining the risk of developing premature and widespread atherosclerosis and related diseases; • determining the sequence and degree of correction of other (traditional) modifiable risk factors when combined with elevated Lp (a); • identifying the cause of early forms of ischemic heart disease (IHD), cerebrovascular disease (CVD), and peripheral vascular diseases; • identifying the cause of severe courses of IHD, CVD, and peripheral vascular diseases; • determining the risk of restenosis after coronary blood flow restoration surgeries; • identifying the cause of ineffective lipid-lowering therapy.
