Description
The biological effects of lithium in the human body are primarily associated with the central nervous, musculoskeletal systems, and the thyroid gland. In the CNS, lithium can promote the release of magnesium from cellular depots, thereby slowing down the conduction of nerve impulses, which in the nervous system as a whole manifests as reduced excitability. Lithium appears to be able to exert a suppressive effect on the thyroid gland by inhibiting the release of hypothalamic releasing hormones and thyrotropin. Acting on carbohydrate metabolism, lithium enhances insulin secretion, leading to the activation of glucose utilization and glycogen synthesis. Lithium salts in the form of medications are used in the treatment of psychiatric, oncological, and certain other diseases. The test is applied for monitoring therapy with lithium preparations and diagnosing poisoning with this chemical element.
