Macroprolactin

Description

Prolactin in the blood exists in several fractions that differ in their biological activity: monomeric prolactin (little-prolactin) with a molecular mass of 23 kDa, constituting normally about 85% of total prolactin; dimeric (big-prolactin with a molecular mass of 50 kDa), which constitutes 10-15%; and high molecular weight (big-big-prolactin) - macroprolactin with a molecular mass of 150 kDa, constituting the smallest fraction of total prolactin. The macroprolactin molecule, which is prolactin bound in a complex with an antibody (IgG), is biologically the least active compared to other fractions. Most often, increased concentration of macroprolactin is detected in the presence of a high level of total prolactin (up to 20% of all hyperprolactinemias). In hyperprolactinemia caused by elevated macroprolactin, symptoms characteristic of this condition are often absent, and classical treatment is not prescribed. The analysis is used as an additional diagnostic test when high values of total prolactin (hyperprolactinemia) are detected in the blood.
