Microscopic examination of a nasal mucosa smear

Description

A rhinocytogram is a microscopic examination of mucus from the nasal cavity. It allows detecting the presence of cells in the nasal mucus that are characteristic of allergic or infectious diseases causing rhinitis – inflammation of the nasal mucosa. In cases of prolonged runny nose, determining the cause can sometimes be difficult. For this purpose, a rhinocytogram is performed, which allows identifying an increased number of eosinophils, serving as an additional argument in favor of the allergic nature of the condition. Allergic and infectious rhinitis are treated differently, which is why it is important to determine the cause of the runny nose.
Reference values are not provided.
The result presents a description of the general cytological picture with a count of leukocytes, eosinophils, neutrophils, ciliated epithelium, lymphocytes, macrophages, mucus, erythrocytes, yeast fungi, and flora. The doctor interprets the result (differential diagnosis of rhinitis) by evaluating the ratio of cell counts.
