Microscopic examination for Demodex mites

Description

Attention! Sampling of biomaterial for this examination is performed only by the attending ophthalmologist!

Demodicosis (from Demodecosis oculi - eyelash mite) is a disease caused by the acne mite (Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis). The mite affects the eyelids, the facial skin around the eyes, nasolabial folds, chin and, less commonly, the external auditory canal. The main diseases resulting from mite parasitism are blepharitis and blepharoconjunctivitis. The presence of the acne mite is associated with an increased predisposition to acne and seborrheic dermatitis. Demodex blepharitis is generally a chronic disease with a fluctuating course, with exacerbations in the spring and autumn periods. Its main symptoms are itching, edema of the eyelid margins and their hyperemia, appearance of skin flaking in the area of eyelash roots, and increased eye fatigue. Demodicosis, like any parasitic disease, is contagious to others. It can be transmitted through close contact with a sick person, using someone else's glasses, or personal hygiene items that come into contact with the face. Predisposing factors for the onset of the disease are: weakening of the immune status, presence of ametropia, metabolic disorders, elderly age, chronic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and lungs. In the medical history of such patients, inflammatory diseases of the adnexal eye structures and skin are usually frequent (sties, recurrent acne rash, psoriasis, loss of eyelashes). Microscopic examination of eyelashes from the affected area, with proper collection, makes it possible to quickly identify the etiological factor (the mite itself) and diagnose the disease.
