Description
Uric acid is the end product of the breakdown of purine bases, which are part of nucleic acids. It is formed as a result of the metabolism of both endogenous nucleic acids and those ingested with food. Uric acid is excreted from the body primarily via urine. Determination of its level in 24-hour urine is used to assess purine metabolism, which is significant in the diagnosis of gout.
