Description
MODY3 is one of the most common forms of monogenic diabetes mellitus. This type is caused by pathogenic variants in the transcription factor HNF1A, which regulates the expression of genes encoding insulin (INS), glucose transporters type 1 and 2 (GLUT1, GLUT2), and sodium-glucose cotransporter type 2 (SGLT2). MODY3 is characterized by mild asymptomatic manifestation (usually by age 25), a gradually progressive course, glucosuria with relatively normal plasma glucose levels, fasting hyperglycemia, and postprandial glycemia. Patients with MODY3 are susceptible to the full spectrum of diabetic complications depending on the degree of glycemic control, therefore timely diagnosis with correctly chosen treatment tactics is necessary.
