Description
N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is a precursor of B-type natriuretic peptide. The main pool of this propeptide is located in cardiomyocytes. Its main function is to enhance natriuresis. Increased secretion and release of BNP occur during dilation of the heart chambers (usually the left ventricle when its pumping function is impaired). This study has high diagnostic accuracy and prognostic significance regarding heart failure. In addition, NT-proBNP determination is used to predict the development of complications after acute coronary syndrome, assess the risk of developing heart failure in patients with diabetes mellitus and hypertension, and as a screening test to diagnose asymptomatic chronic heart failure.
Indications for use:
1. Screening examination in patients with a high probability of heart failure;
2. Diagnosis of early stages of heart failure;
3. Diagnosis of isolated diastolic heart failure;
4. Monitoring the effectiveness of therapy in patients with heart failure;
5. Prognosis assessment in patients with heart failure;
6. Diagnosis of the risk of developing cardiovascular complications in patients with acute coronary syndrome, diabetes mellitus, and cancer patients.
