Description
Osteocalcin is one of the main non-collagenous proteins of bone tissue, synthesized by osteoblasts. Intact protein is destroyed by proteases in the blood; therefore, the determination of its more stable N-Mid fragment (N-osteocalcin) is used for diagnostic purposes. The marker accurately reflects the state of synthetic processes in bone tissue, which is used for the diagnosis and treatment monitoring of osteoporosis. Vitamin D stimulates osteocalcin synthesis, while high concentrations of parathyroid hormone reduce the activity of synthetic processes in osteoblasts and N-osteocalcin concentration in the blood.
