Description
About 5% of Russian residents have Gilbert's syndrome. This condition manifests with non-specific symptoms: abdominal pain, digestive disorders (nausea, belching, constipation, diarrhea), fatigue, general malaise, anxiety, sometimes slight jaundice of the skin and sclera. The cause of Gilbert's syndrome is a decrease in the activity of the enzyme uridine diphosphate glucuronyltransferase, which causes an increase in bilirubin concentration in the blood. Timely diagnosis of Gilbert's syndrome allows for differential diagnosis with severe liver and blood diseases, timely restriction of drugs with hepatotoxic effects, and adjustment of lifestyle until the discomfort caused by hyperbilirubinemia completely disappears.
The fastest way to diagnose Gilbert's syndrome is direct DNA diagnostics, which consists of determining the number of (TA)-repeats in the UGT1A1 gene - uridine diphosphate glucuronyltransferase. An increase in the number of these repeats is a mandatory condition for the development of Gilbert's syndrome
The study results are provided with detailed written comments from a geneticist.
