Description
An increase in the number of triplet repeats (expansion) in unstable regions of the genome is the cause of cerebellar ataxias: spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) type 1 (detection of expansion in the ATXN1 gene), SCA type 2 (detection of expansion in the ATXN2 gene), SCA type 3 (detection of expansion in the ATXN3 gene), SCA type 6 (detection of expansion in the CACNA1A gene), SCA type 7 (detection of expansion in the ATXN7 gene), Friedreich's ataxia (detection of expansion in the FXN gene).
