Determination of X-chromosome inactivation

Description

Normally, a woman's cells contain two X chromosomes. At an early stage of development in female embryos, one of the two X chromosomes is randomly inactivated in each cell. This occurs so that twice the amount of corresponding gene products is not produced from the two copies of X chromosomes. Detection of non-random X-chromosome inactivation may indicate the presence of minimal rearrangements in one of the X chromosomes, which in turn can affect ovarian function and, in some cases, be the cause of a number of endocrinological disorders in women.
