Description
PD-L1 is a chemical substance, a ligand expressed by tumor cells. The protein PD-1 (abbr. from Programmed cell Death-1) is present on the surface of immunocompetent cells (T-lymphocytes). When a T-lymphocyte tries to attach to a cancer cell to destroy it, the PD-1 protein binds to the PD-L1 ligand present on its surface. As a result, the functioning of immune cells is inhibited: proliferation is slowed down, and the release of cytokines destructive to malignant cells does not occur. Thus, the cancerous tumor repels the immune attack and continues its further growth. Assessment of the expression level of the PD-L1 molecule is considered a potential biomarker for prognosis of the effectiveness and duration of treatment of malignant neoplasms.
It is prescribed only in the presence of a ready histological preparation and a histological conclusion.
