Description
Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) is an anaerobic gram-positive spore-forming bacterium that causes infectious diarrhea and pseudomembranous colitis. Patients over 65 years of age undergoing inpatient treatment and receiving antibacterial therapy (or after a course of antibacterial therapy) are most susceptible to C. difficile infection. These patients have reduced immunity to C. difficile due to the age component, the presence of concomitant diseases, as well as changes in the intestinal microflora after exposure to antibiotics. Most epidemics occur in hospital settings and long-term care facilities. With the emergence of hypervirulent strains of C. difficile, cases of infection in young patients with unaltered immunity have become not uncommon.
