Description
Cytokeratins are important markers for the classification of undifferentiated tumors. During the process of malignant transformation of cells, the expression of cytokeratins increases. Different molecular forms of cytokeratins correspond to each type of epithelial cell with a specific localization. Low molecular weight cytokeratin 20 is expressed by highly differentiated "umbrella" cells of the superficial layer of the urothelium. Determination of the cytokeratin content in urine allows for early diagnosis and monitoring of the course of the disease, makes it possible to predict the development of metastases, and serves as a reliable additional indicator of effective treatment of the disease.
